Sur le Pont D’Avignon....

...an old French tune one learnt in French classes many years ago, and while most of the words don’t easily come to mind the first line of the song sticks.

Today we travelled south to Avignon parking the vehicle in Parking Des Italiens a park and ride site barely outside the city walls and took the free bus into the city (to indicate how far that is we walked back to the car park later in the day).

Avignon is a walled city sitting alongside La Rhône, one of the major rivers in Europe and which commences in the Swiss Alps, runs though Lake Geneva and ultimately out into the Mediterranean.

As we walked from the bus stop into the city centre first impressions were only average but during the course of the day as we moved around it started to grow on us.

Near the covered markets there was  a group of (loud) American tourists talking about lunch on “the ship”which caused us after lunch to wander down to the river and have a look at 3 river cruise boats that were in port for the day, the Viking Delling at 135m was particularly impressive.

The main tourist attraction of Avignon is Palais des Papes, an extremely large  (11000 sq metres) medieval Gothic building which during the 1300s housed the Popes before they relocated back to Rome in 1377.

A trip to Avignon is not complete  without going on the bridge at Avignon (sur la Pont D’Avignon) so we completed our sightseeing by doing just that

Kms driven today: 88

Slight improvement in Wifi today so some photos added to yesterday’s blog and also to this one - our hostess, Yvonne, has arranged for a technician to call tomorrow to check out the internet though being ADSL I’m not hopeful he can kick more speed out of it.

For the sake of decency I have omitted to include a photo of the dead insect found in my lunch today - ce n’etait pas bon!
