France is a Pain!

The French love of pain is all too easy to see. You see folk walking down the street holding some under their arm, more than likely one of them has had a chunk taken out of it.

We are told that the average French family goes to the store twice a day to buy some as it doesn’t contain preservatives. You wouldn’t walk more than approximately 150m without seeing a shop that sells it or other products of the same general family.

Pain is bread mainly baguettes with similar being croissants, brioche, pain au raisin, pain au chocolat, pain au amande etc.

We even noticed that some pain is sold by the kg as it was at this stall

We went to a Japanese/Korean restaurant for a very nice meal last night but it was noticed that spelling wasn’t a strong suit of their signwriter!

If we thought that boulangaries were everywhere then as we walked around the city again this morning it soon became apparent that hair salons, both for women and men, are prolific as well and at least one of the men’s salons thought they didn’t do too bad of a job.

As we saw on our last trip NZ Rugby’s tentacles stretch world wide though the Classic AB shops don’t retail official playing strips.

The city was crowded again this morning it being another market day and the temperature was again over 30 degrees rising to 39 around 4pm (there are on average 300 sunny days per year here), so a trip back to the local pool was part of the afternoon’s program.

A couple of photos taken today
A street artist carves this out of sand and by the time he finishes later tonight there will be two puppies on the tits and another by mum’s rear legs - he has carved this scene about 6 times in the days we have been here.

A typical scene in a street near here - almost everyone walks (not surprisingly) in the shade

A colourful slushie (granita if you are French) stall with approximately 18 different flavours

We leave here tomorrow morning and move (slightly) further north to Mornas, about 30km north of Avignon, where we base ourselves for another 11 nights - we plan to do day trips to places like Arles, Nimes, Orange and Viviers as well as explore Avignon , so unlikely to be bored!
