Au Naturale

Mid morning we left Mornas and travelled north west to Le Grotto de St-Marcel-d’Ardeche one of many grottoes in France.

On the way Mrs GPS took us through the back streets of one of the villages, we assume because it had been programmed as the shortest route, however the streets were barely wide enough for the Peugeot to fit!

Arriving at 11.30 we found that the next English guided tour was at 4pm but nevertheless bought tickets for the noon tour in French.

We have been in a sensational caving complex in Slovenia on a previous trip so we were not surprised that this grotto didn’t quite match it, however there were some nice aspects to it.

Given all the information was in French it is impossible to give any specifications such as depth but the caves have been mapped for over 60kms and the temperature is around 14degC

Couldn’t wait to get out of the caves to get the All Blacks score and having seen that over lunch wished I was still underground!

After lunch we travelled on a short distance to Sauze which sits at water level on the river Ardeche and is part of the overall area known as Gorges de L’Ardeche - gorges of the Ardeche. There were numerous lookouts on the way through the gorge...

...and Sauze appeared to be where the action was - numerous cars, plenty of people swimming and also kayaking down the river.

Hot again so we jumped (a misnomer really as old soft feet walking over river stones doesn’t allow one to move quickly) in and enjoyed the clear water, so clear you could see the fish we had disturbed.

We drove home in our wet togs, disobeying Mrs GPS where necessary to avoid those narrow roads.

An enjoyable day.
