Salisbury

We came here because it just happened to fit in the itinerary - we drive around 200kms from one stop to the next and Salisbury was a natural break between Axminster and Portsmouth where we catch the ferry.

We have not been disappointed, on the contrary it is an English city we could live in if the weather was right - it certainly has been during our stay being around 25 degrees again today but whether that would hold good for the other 364 days in the year is certainly mute.

After breakfast we started what was to become a longish walk!

Next door to our B&B is The Old Mill pub which is not unpleasant to look at....

... and as we walked a different route into town than the Town Path we passed some homes which said "look at me" ...

... and we walked through the Cathedral grounds stopping to admire the Cathedral and the general surrounds - museums, Edward Heaths old home.

A coffee break in the city recharged us for the walk to the Old Sarum which is recognised as the earliest settlement in Salisbury and is dated back to 3000BC. It sits on a hill to the north of the city and at one time consisted of a Cathedral and a Castle, however as the settlement started to die these buildings were virtually deconstructed and the stone blocks were reused to build the current Salisbury Cathedral and other buildings as the new settlement of Salisbury came to life.

At the base of the hill is Hudson's Field a vast open area which today was hosting The Run for Life - we saw the 2nd finisher cross the line - he looked no more than 7 or 8 and his time for the 5km run was an impressive 24 minutes.

There is an aero club close to Old Sarum and plane after plane were going airborne each dropping 8 parachutists who made quite a sight as the came back down.

On our walk back "home" we passed a Music in the Park event and we also watched the youngsters enjoying themselves in the waterhole in front of the Old Mill pub - the waterhole appears to be a favoured spot by many local families!

We certainly have enjoyed our couple of days here in Salisbury.
