Germany’s best known and most popular holiday route is Romantische Straße (The Romantic Road) which runs from the Main in Würzburg to the Alps in Fussen passing through many “medieval” towns.
Today we set off to traverse the route which we have broken down into three segments - Würzburg to
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Augsburg, and Augsburg to Fussen.
Early on as we left Würzburg there was a lot less romance and plenty of stress in the air as there was a tug of war between the driver, the GPS, the Tourist route signs and the in car navigator. The GPS wanted to take us on the motorway, the driver wanted to follow the signs and the in car navigator was trying to find the route on a tourist map.
Notwithstanding that we got to our first stop mid-morning at Tauberbischofsheim which is the main town of the Main-Tauber district and is one of the oldest towns in the Tauber Valley.
The town’s landmark is the Türmersturm which is encompassed by the castle of the Kurmainz district

The town like most has some very attractive buildings
Moving further down the road we stopped at Bad Mergentheim the former residence of the Grand and German Masters of the Order of Teutonic Knights - again old gorgeous buildings and a well maintained Schloss
Within the grounds of the Schloss was a memorial to Jewish folk from the district who lost their lives during the Nazi rule
Our next stop was Creglingen but that was a poor choice as it had little to offer, even the Tourist Information Office was closed!

We spent no more than 20 minutes in Creglingen before moving to Rothenburg o.d.t where we spend 2 nights - more about Rothenburg tomorrow once we have looked around but it is a completely walled town and the car is parked outside the walls, safely we hope.
