ROT for short

Rothenburg ob der Tauber (ROT for short) is a walled town in the Tauber valley, one of only 4 German towns where the walls are intact (according to a tourism brochure we picked up).

Unbeknown to us, our accommodation is beside Plönlein which is said (another tourism statement) to be the most famous photo subject in Germany!

Taken from the brochure

Many think that the name Plönlein refers to a yellow timber-frame house at the entrance of the Spital quarter. It is true that the tilted, crooked house is in the center of the Plönlein. The term Plönlein is actually translated as a “small square at a fountain”, which means that the ensemble at the Plönlein also includes the fountain in front of the lone timber-frame house and the two towers of the old city wall that rise to its left and right – on the left the Siebersturm leading to Spital quarter, on the right the tower for the Kobolzeller Tor from 1360, which opens towards the Tauber Valley.

It is the only position in ROT where one gets two of the towers clearly in a photograph

ROT is a very touristy town but when we went out earlier this morning the streets were very quiet which allowed us to take some photos around the Marktplatz and the main Straße

As the morning wore on the streets came alive with folk!

In our post for Heidelberg we mentioned the snowball cakes (Schneebällen) that were first created here in ROT over 400 years ago, so not unsurprisingly for morning tea we indulged  - verdict, doubtful we will buy anymore!

In the afternoon we found the access to the walls and walked around the town on those parts of the wall that were available to do so. Not sure of the distance but I guess +/- 4kms.

It gave good views of the Tauber Valley as well as the buildings adjacent to the wall

Across the valley looking at another section of wall
The walkway was covered all the way

General view looking into the town
Perhaps the nicest property seen

Tomorrow we move on further down the Romantische Straße
