A split city

The Danube runs through 10 countries and divides a city in two, so stated a poster we saw today and that city is Ulm as the Danube runs through the city and the old town area “Ulm” is north of the river while “Neu Ulm” is south of the river.

The main feature of the old town is the Munster which is said to have the highest church spire of any church in the world. As shown in the following photo the church is quite dour to look at as it is internally, there being ongoing external maintenance being undertaken.

One would think that by now we would not be wowed when we see an old building but having spent many months in Europe over the years we are still struck by the beauty of the old well kept buildings in every city we visit and Ulm is no different especially around the “Fisherman’s Village”

In this area is what is said to be the most crooked hotel in the world and the extent of the crookedness can be seen from the distance the pendulum sits away from the side of the building in the second photo

Every city has its Rathaus or town hall and the one in Ulm is one of if not the most stunning we have seen
with every side of it covered in brilliantly coloured frescoes or murals, the building also houses an astronomical clock. The building was constructed in 1370 and the frescoes were added in the 16th century and the clock dates from 1520.

Like many others we walked along the banks of the Danube late afternoon and enjoyed the environment.
