Very Sassy

Another relocation today, this time to the inland city of Matera in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy.

Why Matera?

Also known as the city of the “Sassi”, Matera is one of the few cities in the world that has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times. Since 1993, the extensive Sassi district which is the area of the city’s ancient cave-dwellings and the Park of the Rock Churches, has been on the World Heritage List.

The Sassi has been described as “one of the most outstanding organised urban settlements ever created in the world, a real masterpiece of human creative genius and capacity to adapt”

Having arrived around lunchtime and with the sun blazingly hot we limited ourselves to walking around the lower area of town today and will venture into the Sassi tomorrow.

When one thinks about it, Italy has some incredible and unique places to visit, there currently being 58 UNESCO World Heritages sites listed and many more under consideration.
