Non chiuso ma aperto

The advice given to us that the town would be closed today was in fact incorrect as the majority of shops in the old town were open and doing good trade to the many tourists ambling through the streets.

After finishing off some shopping for ourselves (suitcases now look a tad too small) we spent the remainder of the day strolling the town and looking at some of the main sights.

In the old historic area there are 24 (yes 24 in I estimate less than 4 square kilometres) churches and the two most impressive of the ones we saw are the Basilica Di Santa Croce which is a very fine example of a Baroque style church built in 1695

and The Duomo, built between 1659 & 1670, which sits on the Piazza del Duomo and is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (which was being remembered today and the reason for the holiday)

Other top sights were the Anfiteatro Romano, built during the Hadrian period, but later covered by the foundations of other buildings until excavated in 1901 - given the number of similar amphitheaters we have seen on this and other trips, in all states of repair, them Romans were very busy boys in their day

The town has 3 main entrances and we went to two of them, Porta Rudiae

and Porta Napoli

Other items of interest (to us) were the old town itself - one could take many photos of buildings etc that stood out

or scenes that caught the eye
as well as some of the objects around the town

There is a Banksy exhibition on at the moment and this was painted on a building in 2020 by an unknown artist though the signature is one of the many used by Banksy - it’s regarded as a “fake”
