Today we had a day with a tour guide who took us to 4 of over 300 tourist sights available in Delhi and while all were spectacular one was very humbling.
First we went to Humayun’s Tomb - Humayun governed from 1530 before being defeated by Sher Shah Suri, but he regained power by recapturing the throne from Sufi’s nephew, however after a year Humayan died. Following his death a magnificent structure was built which became his tomb
In this site were numerous other structures such as Isa Khan’s garden tomb
We then travelled across Delhi to a Hindu temple and learnt a lot about Hinduism, which is the faith of our guide.
We learnt that the Swastika is a symbol Hindu’s have been using for 100s of years - the symbol can be seen in the top left of the photo above..
During general chat we got a better understanding of arranged marriages as our guide was married in those circumstances - arranged marriages still make up 65% of all Indian marriages.
We ended up the day with a visit to Qutab Minar which was built 800 years ago and at over 72 meters is the tallest minaret in the world. Just like the Pisa structure Qutab Minar has developed a tilt.
However before we visited Qutab Minar we went to one of only 11 Sikh temples in India.
While the structure was “ nice” it was what goes on there that was the most humbling.
Anyone no matter their age, race, colour, or creed can call in and enjoy one of the 20000 meals they serve each day.
We were lucky enough to be able to walk through the kitchen to see the scale of the operation
All the food is donated and then prepared by a team of many.
Our guide who is not of that faith goes to the temple 2 times per week to be a part of the kitchen staff,
Humbling indeed!!
(Need to call quits for tonight otherwise the post will look like it did yesterday!)
